Counselling & Psychotherapy Practice

Counselling & Psychotherapy

If you are considering Counselling & Psychotherapy you might have a few questions about what it is and how it works. In addition to the piece below, please go to our Frequently Asked Questions for more practical answers to some of your questions.

Psychotherapy is a way to help people with a broad variety of emotional difficulties and mental illness. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing. During psychotherapy, you learn about yourself and your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Psychotherapy helps you learn how to take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills. Psychotherapy usually involves talking, but sometimes other methods may be used – for example, art, music and movement.

Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, medical illness, the death of a loved one and depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issues. Here at The Phoenix Centre we are trained in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy which means we can change our approach and methodology to suit each individual Client. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.
